# Phuket Travel Guide: Beaches, Islands & Where to Stay
Phuket gets a mixed reputation — overdeveloped in parts, absolutely stunning in others. The secret is knowing where to go. Skip Patong for more than one night, and you'll find the island many people miss entirely.
- **Freedom Beach** — Only accessible by longtail boat from Patong. 300 baht round trip. The finest white sand on the island, no jetskis, one small restaurant
- **Nai Harn** — The local favorite on the southern tip. Shallow, calm waters for swimming. Good restaurants and a lagoon to explore
- **Surin** — Phuket's most elegant beach. Gorgeous sand, good snorkeling, sunset-facing
- **Kata Noi** — Tiny cove south of Kata. Quiet, stunning, and the best sunset on the west coast
- **Mai Khao** — 11km of empty beach in the north. Plane-spotting from the sand (Phuket airport runway ends at the beach). No swimming in monsoon season
- **Phi Phi Islands** — Yes, it's crowded. Yes, Maya Bay is still closed periodically for rehabilitation. But the boat ride through the limestone karsts is genuinely spectacular. Book an early morning tour to beat the crowds
- **Similan Islands** — World-class diving and snorkeling (closed May–October). Day trips from Phuket are long but worth it. The water clarity rivals the Maldives
- **James Bond Island** (Phang Nga Bay) — The iconic needle rock from The Man with the Golden Gun. Combine with sea canoeing through caves and mangroves
- **Rawai/Nai Harn** (south) — Best for long stays. Local vibe, great restaurants, close to the best beaches
- **Kamala/Surin** (central west) — Best for families. Quiet, beautiful beaches, good dining
- **Old Phuket Town** (east) — Best for culture. Sino-Portuguese architecture, weekend night market, zero tourists after 9pm
- **Skip**: Patong unless you specifically want nightlife
- **One Chun** (Phuket Town) — Best southern Thai food on the island. The crab curry is legendary
- **Mor Mu Dong** — Mangrove-side seafood restaurant. Your table is a bamboo platform over the water
- **Kata Night Market** — Fresh seafood grilled to order for $5-10. Better than the touristy Phuket Weekend Market
Rent a scooter (200-300 baht/day). Wear a helmet — police checkpoints are real and fines are 500-1,000 baht on the spot. Smart Bus goes along the west coast for 100 baht — air-conditioned, reliable, covers all beaches.
