# St Lucia Travel Guide: The Pitons & Volcanic Paradise
St Lucia looks the way people imagine the Caribbean before they've been there — dramatic twin peaks rising from turquoise water, rainforest dripping down mountainsides, and fishing villages painted in pastels. The Pitons (Gros and Petit) are the island's soul — UNESCO-listed volcanic plugs that define every postcard shot.
Gros Piton is the climbable one (Petit is steeper and restricted). The hike takes 4-5 hours round trip with a guide (required — about $50). It's strenuous but not technical. The view from the summit across to Petit Piton and the sea below is one of the Caribbean's greatest panoramas. Start at 6am to beat the heat.
The world's only "drive-in volcano" — you literally park in the crater. The sulphur springs bubble and steam in a moonscape of grey and yellow. The mud baths are the real draw — slather yourself in mineral-rich volcanic mud, let it dry, then rinse in the hot spring waterfall. Your skin will feel incredible for days.
**Anse Chastanet** — Dark volcanic sand, excellent snorkeling right off the beach, and a view of the Pitons. The marine reserve here protects healthy coral and abundant fish.
**Sugar Beach** (between the Pitons) — White sand imported from Guyana (St Lucia's beaches are naturally dark volcanic sand). The most Instagrammed beach on the island. Access requires going through the Viceroy resort. It's public by law — don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
The old French capital, nestled at the base of the Pitons. Colourful wooden buildings, a beautiful Catholic church, and the best jumping-off point for Pitons adventures. The Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens here have a mineral waterfall that changes colour.
- **Jade Mountain** — The iconic resort with open-wall rooms facing the Pitons. Each room has its own infinity pool. From $1,200/night
- **Ladera** — Same views, lower price point. Three-walled rooms open to the jungle and Pitons
- **Budget**: Hummingbird Beach Resort or Fond Doux Plantation — both have Pitons views at a fraction of the cost
